Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Thursday highlighted the need for constructive debates in legislative bodies, emphasizing that disruptions and lack of meaningful discussions are a matter of concern.
“Debates should be based on facts and ideas, not just accusations and counter-allegations,” he said while inaugurating the 11th Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region.

The conference, held at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, brought together presiding officers of state and central legislatures to discuss ways to build public trust and fulfill public aspirations through effective legislative functioning.

“The strength of any democracy lies in the faith of its people in its institutions and the accountability of those in power,” Birla said, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in legislative bodies.
The conference focused on leveraging technology to strengthen democracy, building capacity for representatives, and making legislative institutions more effective and people-oriented. Birla’s remarks underscored the need for a renewed commitment to democratic values and principles.
“We are here today to engage in meaningful dialogue and discussions around democratic institutions, governance, transparency, and public trust,” Birla said.
