Surulia Zoo in Purulia is set to receive its first pair of leopards, followed soon by a grey wolf, a development expected to further boost tourism in West Bengal. The West Bengal Zoo Authority (WBZA) has given its approval after a recent inspection by a high-level delegation.
The Minister replying to a query by Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy told the House that 48 leopards and 7 royal Bengal tigers have died in different forest divisions in Odisha from 2014-15 to 2023-24.
The team has 16 cages, 20 cameras, and trap drone cameras. Combing operations have also been launched to track down the man-eater leopard.
Around 300 personnel commenced the exercise in 10 ranges in the Sathyamangalam Division and in Hasanur Division that comes under the STR.
In a report named “Status of Leopard in India 2018”, it was mentioned that India now has 12,852 leopards. More than 60% increase in population has been recorded over the previous estimate which was conducted in 2014.
There are four tigers in the park presently--three female and one male. Among the four tigers, two are cubs- -Rika, Kika-and the two adult ones are Sheela and Vivan.
