At his regular press briefing here, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman soon after his election victory.
‘’India stands ready to support Bangladesh’s endeavours to build a democratic, progressive and inclusive nation,’’ Birla told the new leader of Bangladesh at the meeting while conveying him the wishes of the Indian PM.
Though it was a routine social media post on ‘X’ by the Indian leader, its significance was not lost because his message to the new leader in Bangladesh came much before China or Pakistan reacted in the rapidly-changing regional dynamics of South Asia.
Bangladesh’s tryst with elections slated for Thursday is not merely a test for the South Asian nation’s democratic will, but also a test of how things will evolve on the larger South Asian canvas.
Hasina has been residing in India since August 2024, when she fled Dhaka during the student-led “July Uprising” that toppled her government.
The Indian government’s message to Dhaka, following the latest judgment, appears unmistakable: “You may place any demand you wish, but India will take its own decisions in its own way.”

The Ministry of External Affairs said PM Modi expressed confidence that the partnership between India and Bangladesh would continue to flourish under Sheikh Hasina's "far-sighted" leadership.
