At his regular press briefing here, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman soon after his election victory.
‘’India stands ready to support Bangladesh’s endeavours to build a democratic, progressive and inclusive nation,’’ Birla told the new leader of Bangladesh at the meeting while conveying him the wishes of the Indian PM.
Though it was a routine social media post on ‘X’ by the Indian leader, its significance was not lost because his message to the new leader in Bangladesh came much before China or Pakistan reacted in the rapidly-changing regional dynamics of South Asia.
Bangladesh’s tryst with elections slated for Thursday is not merely a test for the South Asian nation’s democratic will, but also a test of how things will evolve on the larger South Asian canvas.
The Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) sharp reaction came in the wake of several attacks on minorities, especially Hindus in the neighbouring country, that came to light of late.
In a statement posted on X, Mayawati referred to recent incidents of communal violence in Bangladesh, including the killing of a Dalit youth, and said the anger seen on Indian streets in response was natural.
Former National Security Adviser to Mauritius Shantanu Mukharji, in an interview to UNI said recent developments across India’s eastern border suggested “a dangerous reversal of hard-won gains against militancy.”
This violence is not an isolated event. Since the killing of a student leader earlier this year, political mobilisation on the streets has intensified.
"The Government of India attaches the highest importance to the safety, security, and welfare of Indian fishermen. To this end, it continues to work assiduously to secure the release of our fishermen from Bangladesh custody," according to an MEA statement.
