Imran Khan

Pakistan never ceases to amaze observers

Pakistan never ceases to amaze. This was evident in their recently concluded elections. Polling results were delayed by days to select candidates shortlisted by the Rawalpindi clique of generals.

Pakistan cannot wish Imran Khan away

That something is always the same: an appeal to the people. Follow- ing the vote of no-confidence in April 2022, for example, Khan announced a long march to Islamabad in May.

Difficult days ahead for Imran Khan

Instability within the country has already hit Pakistan’s financial markets. Hoping to gain popularity and stave off the challenge, Imran announced a reduction in oil prices, alongside a slew of other schemes which his government can ill afford and which are against existing agreements with the IMF. This is adding to economic uncertainty as further financial assistance from IMF may be blocked leading to Pakistan defaulting on payments.

Pakistan’s neutrality

“We are friends with Russia and we are also friends with America. We are friends with China and with Europe. We are not in any camp." On March 2, Pakistan along with 34 other countries had abstained from voting on the United Nations’ resolution that condemned the “Russian aggression against Ukraine”.
