The TFR is the average number of children a woman would have in her lifetime if she experienced the current age-specific fertility rates throughout her reproductive years (typically ages 15–49), according to health authorities.
India has achieved a Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.0 as per NFHS-5 (2019–21). This is aligned with the National Population Policy 2000 and the National Health Policy 2017 (TFR of 2.1).

As fertility falls and life expectancy increases worldwide, the number of children under five is forecast to decline by more than 40 percent, from 681 million in 2017 to 401 million in 2100, the study found.
Kumar said the state’s fertility rate has come down to 3.3 from 4.3 in 2005 when he had taken over the reins of the state, it said.
