The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the Bombay High Court order granting bail to former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a money laundering case.
A bench of the Supreme Court granted liberty to the petitioner, Anil Deshmukh, to file an application seeking an early hearing in his bail plea pending before the Bombay High Court.
The 'lookout' circular will effectively prevent Deshmukh from fleeing the country since he has skipped at least five ED summons to join the probe.
Deshmukh had earlier skipped two summons of the ED in the case related to bribery allegations.
Deshmukh (72), is facing an ED investigation on the basis of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case as the fallout of the allegations made in a letter penned by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, who is now the Commandant-General of Home Guards.
Raids were also carried out at five locations, in May, as part of the probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
A huge group of police and central police forces also arrived at Deshmukh's residence with the ED team.
The CBI registered a preliminary enquiry on April 6 after the Bombay High Court asked the agency to probe the allegations of bribery and misuse of office.
