Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Amarinder Singh on Saturday ordered expenditure cuts by all government departments to meet urgent expenses needed to deal with the current crisis.
The CM was reacting to reports in a section of the media quoting him as saying that he will not lift the curfew, imposed in the light of COVID-19 crisis, on April 14.
An official spokesperson said the Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had earlier authorized Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta to pull out any number of police personnel from his (CM’s) personal security, or that of other VIP protectees, for deployment for COVID-19 crisis management, as he may deem fit.
In a video message address to the people of Punjab, the CM said he was forced to take this extreme step “in the interest of the state, and in the interest of all of you”, as he had received reports that people were moving around normally in towns, mohallas and cities despite the lockdown that became effective this morning.
Amarinder wrote in this regard to Union home minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra CM, Udhav Thackeray, according to an official spokesperson, who disclosed that the Maharashtra government had responded with the assurance that necessary action would be taken to help out the stranded pilgrims.
