The CID approached the Bankshal Court seeking permission to obtain handwriting specimens from TMC MLAs Baharul Islam, Subhashis Das and Arup Roy. The court approved the request, paving the way for examination of samples.
Claiming that the incident was “BJP-sponsored”, Banerjee said, "It's all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. It hasn't even been a month, and the police are nowhere to be seen."
The owner of the building, Montu Saha, who heads the company Modern Decorators, said the decision was driven purely by concerns over the safety of the property and not by political pressure or any personal differences with the party.
The fresh round of security reduction has affected multiple prominent names within the Trinamool Congress, including Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Kumar, senior party leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, MLA Kunal Ghosh, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Aroop Biswas and Subrata Bakshi.
The unrest follows a night of violence marked by allegations of crude bomb attacks, door-to-door intimidation and clashes that left several people injured. Competing narratives emerged from both sides, ISF accusing ruling TMC leaders of orchestrating fear, while TMC pointed fingers at police excesses and dismissed claims of targeted attacks.
ECI affirmed that the 2026 polls will be conducted without fear, violence, or manipulation, signalling a stricter enforcement stance in a politically charged state.
The warning comes after two back-to-back incidents in central Kolkata: violent clashes between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and TMC workers in front of the CEO’s office, followed by an overnight protest staged by TMC supporters.
TMC supremo alleged that BJP workers were submitting large numbers of Form 6 applications, used for new voter registration, to allegedly include “outsiders” in the state’s electoral rolls.
She argued that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is fighting the political battle on behalf of the people of the state.
