‘We’ve grown up playing it’: Bhaichung Bhutia praises Durand Cup ahead of Kolkata Derby

Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has welcomed the Durand Cup’s expanding footprint, describing it as one of football’s most prestigious tournaments while urging organisers to bring matches to Siliguri in future editions.

Speaking ahead of the 135th Durand Cup, Bhutia said the historic competition deserves the support of all major clubs and praised the initiative to take the tournament to multiple host cities.

The former India skipper, who hails from the region, said Siliguri shares a deep connection with football and deserves to host at least one group-stage fixture.

“It is a very good initiative because the Durand Cup is the second-oldest tournament in the world and such a prestigious tournament. I hope that with the support of the Bengal Government, all the big clubs would play. We’ve also grown up playing in this competition. I would like to request that one of the group matches of the Durand Cup be held here in Siliguri,” Bhutia said.

Durand Cup 2026 begins with Kolkata Derby

The 135th edition of the Durand Cup kicks off on July 25 with the much-anticipated Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC.

The month-long tournament, running until August 23, features 24 teams divided into six groups across five host cities, Kolkata, Ranchi, Imphal, Shillong and Guwahati.

Kolkata, which has hosted the tournament since 2019, will stage the opening match, both Groups A and B, two quarterfinals, the first semifinal and the final, while the other cities continue to strengthen the competition’s growing national presence.
