Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan on Tuesday faced the fury of English batsmen as he became the most expensive bowler in the World Cup history during Afghanistan’s match against hosts England at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Rashid Khan, world’s No.3 ODI bowler, leaked 110 runs off his nine overs as England posted a mammoth 397 for six in 50 overs after electing to bat. England won the match by 150 runs as Afghanistan could manage only 247 runs in 50 overs.

The 20-year-old spinner surpassed New Zealand’s Martin Snedden who had conceded 105 runs for two wickets against England in 1983 World Cup. Snedden conceded the runs in 12 overs as the 1983 World Cup was played in a 60-over per side format with each bowler allowed a maximum of 12 overs.

Ahead of Afghanistan’s match against England, Rashid had taken one for 52 against Australia, before snapping two for 17 against Sri Lanka. He gave away 45 runs without taking a wicket against South Africa.

Tuesday turned out to be a nightmare for him as the English batsmen were in a thunderous form, hitting the ball out of the park on many occasions.

In the same match, England skipper Eoin Morgan broke the record for most sixes in an innings which was jointly held by Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle.

Rashid’s woeful figures also make him the joint second most expensive in ODI history. Pakistan’s left-arm Wahab Riaz had given away 110 runs in 10 overs against England in August 2016.

Overall, Rashid Khan has taken 128 wickets in 63 ODIs and 75 from 38 T20Is.
