MS Dhoni back in CSK

Rajiv Kumar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captain during his First-class days, has been appointed as the fielding coach of Chennai Super Kings for the eleventh edition of Indian Premier League. Rajiv will replace Steve Rixon.

Kumar was also the coach of Jharkhand in the last season of Ranji Trophy and has coaching experience in the UK. On Wednesday, Rajiv started the training session with CSK.

Before becoming a coach, Kumar had led India Blue in Deodhar Trophy and shares a great rapport with former Indian skipper Dhoni.

Dhoni and Kumar had played together for Bihar / Jharkhand for several years. In 2003 Vidarbha Trophy tournament, the duo had shared a match-winning 117-run stand for the seventh wicket.

Talking about their decision to appoint Rajiv Kumar as their fielding coach, Kasi Vishwanathan, CSK’s CEO, told The Times of India: “Dhoni has a great rapport with him and knows him since his playing days. With Rixon not there, we felt the need for an extra hand during the pre-season training camp and during the tournament. So we went with Rajiv.”

“Rajiv brings to the table certain specific skills as fielding coach. He has good coaching experience, he bonds well with the players and he has sound knowledge about local talents,” Kasi added.

The Chennai-based franchise is back in the cash-rich league after being suspended for two years. In 2015, CSK was banned from IPL for two years due to spot-fixing scandal and the team is leaving no stone unturned in promoting their comeback in the IPL.
