India have suffered a major setback ahead of the deciding third ODI against England at Lord’s, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ruled out after developing swelling in his left knee.

The three-match series is level at 1-1, making Sunday’s clash a winner-takes-all contest.

BCCI confirms knee injury

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Bumrah sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI in Cardiff, resulting in reactive swelling that ruled him out of the series decider.

“Jasprit Bumrah had an impact injury on his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee,” the BCCI said in an official statement.

Before the toss, Bumrah was seen undergoing a fitness assessment and later speaking with captain Shubman Gill and senior batter Virat Kohli, but the pacer ultimately failed to receive clearance to play.

Big blow to India’s bowling attack

Bumrah’s absence weakens India’s pace attack significantly, especially at Lord’s, where his ability to strike with the new ball and at the death would have been crucial.

The fast bowler returned figures of 1/31 in the first ODI at Birmingham and 1/45 in the second match at Cardiff, but his influence extended well beyond the numbers through his control and ability to build pressure.

England, meanwhile, will be relieved not to face India’s premier fast bowler as they chase a rare bilateral ODI series victory over the visitors.

England eye first ODI series win over India since 2018

The series is finely poised after two matches, with both teams heading into the decider with everything to play for.

England are bidding for their first ODI series win over India since 2018. It is the 23rd bilateral ODI series between the two sides, with England having won only seven of those contests.

India, meanwhile, has claimed victory in each of the last three ODI series between the two teams. A win at Lord’s would also give England consecutive ODI series triumphs following their 2-1 comeback victory over Sri Lanka earlier this year.
