The stage is set for another chapter in one of women’s cricket’s greatest rivalries as hosts England take on defending champions Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday.
For Australia, it is another opportunity to underline an era of dominance. For England, it is a chance to end years of frustration against their oldest rivals and lift the trophy at the venue where they won the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009.

The two teams have met in three previous Women’s T20 World Cup finals, in 2012, 2014 and 2018, and Australia emerged victorious on each occasion. England will be hoping home conditions and a rejuvenated squad can finally turn the tide.

Australia have once again looked like the team to beat throughout the tournament, reaching the final with six consecutive victories. Under new captain Sophie Molineux, who took over following Alyssa Healy’s retirement earlier this year, the six-time champions have combined experience with depth, with Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner and Georgia Wareham all making important contributions.
England, meanwhile, have steadily built momentum under captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and head coach Charlotte Edwards. Their convincing semi-final victory over South Africa has given the hosts confidence heading into the biggest match of the tournament as they chase a second Women’s T20 World Cup title.
Beyond the trophy, Sunday’s final is also expected to cap a landmark tournament for women’s cricket. ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the 2026 edition has become the biggest Women’s T20 World Cup in history in terms of stadium attendance and global television and digital viewership, highlighting the continued growth of the women’s game.
The occasion at Lord’s will also feature a closing ceremony with performances by Rita Ora and Clean Bandit before attention turns to the cricket.
