The FIFA World Cup 2026 reaches its grand finale on Monday (IST) as defending champions Argentina take on Spain at MetLife Stadium in New York, with both sides chasing history in what promises to be a blockbuster showdown.
For Argentina, the opportunity is to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title. Spain, meanwhile, are aiming to lift the trophy for only the second time and end a 16-year wait since their triumph in South Africa in 2010.

Messi’s final dance or Yamal’s arrival on football’s biggest stage?
Much of the spotlight will once again fall on Lionel Messi, who has rolled back the years to inspire Argentina’s unbeaten run to the final. The 39-year-old captain has scored eight goals and provided four assists, once again proving decisive when his country needed him most.
Should this be Messi’s final World Cup appearance, the Argentine legend has one last opportunity to sign off by retaining the title he helped win in Qatar four years ago.
Standing between Messi and another World Cup crown is Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The 19-year-old has emerged as one of the stars of the tournament, adding another chapter to a story that began with an iconic photograph of Messi holding him as a baby in 2007.
Spain’s defence faces Argentina’s relentless attack
While Yamal has grabbed headlines, Spain’s biggest strength has been their defensive discipline.
Luis de la Fuente’s side have conceded just one goal throughout the tournament, frustrating opponents with their possession-based approach while remaining compact without the ball. Captain Rodri has dictated the tempo from midfield, while Mikel Oyarzabal leads the team’s scoring charts with five goals.
Argentina, on the other hand, has relied on its attacking firepower and resilience. Lionel Scaloni’s side has repeatedly found ways to recover from difficult situations during the knockout rounds, showcasing both experience and character.
Road to the final
Spain recovered from an opening draw against Cabo Verde to top Group H before comfortably beating Austria in the Round of 32. They then edged Portugal and Belgium in tightly contested knockout matches before producing one of their best displays of the tournament to eliminate France in the semi-finals.
Argentina enjoyed a perfect group stage before surviving a series of dramatic knockout encounters. They needed extra time to overcome Cabo Verde and Switzerland, staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down against Egypt, and fought back to beat England in the semi-finals after conceding first.
Monday’s final will also pit two contrasting footballing styles against each other.
Spain remains faithful to their possession-heavy game, built around patient passing and midfield control, while incorporating greater attacking intent under De la Fuente.
Argentina has embraced a more direct and aggressive approach, pressing high, attacking quickly in transition, and relying on individual brilliance from Messi, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez.
With both teams unbeaten and in outstanding form, the World Cup final could be decided by the finest of margins.
