Kylian Mbappe’s second-half penalty proved decisive as two-time champions France edged past a resilient Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 to book a FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash against Morocco.
Mbappe converted from the spot in the 69th minute to settle a hard-fought contest at Philadelphia Stadium, taking his tally to seven goals at the 2026 tournament. The strike drew him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race, with the French captain ahead on assists.

The goal also saw Mbappe move to 19 World Cup goals, one shy of Argentina’s all-time World Cup record of 20, while extending his own record to 11 goals in World Cup knockout matches. He also became the first player to score in the Round of 16 at three consecutive FIFA World Cups.

France dominated possession throughout but found Paraguay difficult to break down. Buoyed by their penalty shootout victory over Germany in the previous round, the South Americans defended in numbers and disrupted France’s rhythm with a physical approach, leaving Les Bleus frustrated for much of the opening half.
The French struggled to create clear-cut chances before the break, with their attempts largely restricted to long-range efforts that failed to trouble goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
Didier Deschamps’ side emerged with greater urgency after the restart. Ousmane Dembele fired into the side netting from a cleverly worked corner before Gill produced an excellent full-stretch save to deny Manu Kone from distance.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Desire Doue was brought down inside the penalty area, with the decision awarded following a VAR review. Mbappe made no mistake from the spot, calmly sending Gill the wrong way to secure France’s place in the last eight.
“We knew what kind of match to expect. It was important for us to experience a game like that and see how we handled it. We showed we’re not just a team capable of attacking football. Every team plays to its strengths, and the only thing that matters is winning. Now we have to focus on Morocco. We’re really looking forward to facing them because we know they’re a very good team,” Mbappe said after the match.
France head coach Didier Deschamps praised his players for maintaining their composure despite Paraguay’s disruptive tactics.
“It wasn’t easy. If we’d taken another chance late in the game, the finish would have been more comfortable. Paraguay used every trick in the book. It may not be the kind of football people enjoy watching, but we stayed focused, and that’s not easy to do. They’re a physical team and defend very well. It’s another important step forward. South American teams are always difficult to play against, but I’m delighted the players got the job done. We’re into the quarter-finals, and we have to enjoy that,” Deschamps said.
France, champions in 1998 and 2018, will face Morocco at Boston Stadium on July 9 after the Atlas Lions eliminated co-hosts Canada 3-0 in their Round of 16 clash.
