Unable to smell? The loss of the sense of smell could be a sign of a serious health condition. Do not ignore if you are unable to smell food and any other smell.

Well, you can’t smell anything when you suffer from severe cold and cough. But if the problem continues even after you have long recovered, there is need to consult a doctor.

Loss of smell, especially in adults, could lead to loss of memory. In fact, losing the ability to smell can impact the mental health condition of a person. Loss of smell and memory is said to be closely linked with depression.

“Loss of the sense of smell is a strong signal that something has gone wrong and significant damage has been done,” said lead author Jayant M Pinto, Professor at the University of Chicago, as reported in IANS.

Researchers at the university conducted a study of nearly 3000 adults between age 57 to 85. The study was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. The results of the study “show that the sense of smell is closely connected with brain function and health,” Pinto said.

Are people suffering from depression more at risk of losing the ability to smell?

“Being unable to smell is closely associated with depression as people don’t get as much pleasure in life,” Pinto added.

If you are feeling depressed. Don’t let it frown you. Get up and do something that would make you feel good. Take a walk, go for a long run, hit a spa, go for a spa treatment, take a beauty bath, call up your friend, speak to them, listen to music, eat the things you love most, go out for a coffee or a bite even on your own. Above all, pray and stay positive.
