This summer fruit is 95% water, and that’s just the beginning

When the summer sun drains your body faster than you realise, one chilled bowl of kharbuja quietly brings life back into it. Acharya Balkrishna’s simple reminder turns this everyday fruit into nature’s own cooling therapy for heat.

Ayurvedic scholar Acharya Balkrishna recently shared on Facebook that muskmelon, the humble kharbuja eaten across Indian homes every summer, is far more than just a sweet treat. He calls it a natural powerhouse of antioxidants, vitamin C, and essential minerals that the body genuinely needs in hot weather.

A glass of water, in fruit form

With 95% water content, muskmelon is one of the most hydrating fruits you can eat. In peak summer, when dehydration quietly creeps in, eating a bowl of muskmelon helps replenish fluids and electrolytes without any added sugar or artificial ingredients. It also contains natural sugars that give you a gentle energy lift, no crash after.

Your stomach will thank you

Acharya Balkrishna specifically highlights its role in fixing digestion and acidity. Muskmelon has a mildly alkaline nature, which helps neutralise excess stomach acid, a very common problem in summer heat. It is also a good source of dietary fibre, which keeps bowel movements regular and prevents the bloating and discomfort that many people experience when they shift to heavier, oilier summer diets.

Potassium keeps stress in check

One of the standout points in Acharya Balkrishna’s post is how potassium in muskmelon directly helps manage stress. Potassium is a mineral that regulates blood pressure. It helps nerves function properly. When potassium levels are low, body stays in state of tension.

Muskmelon naturally replenishes it, helping the body calm down from both physical and mental stress. A 100g serving provides about 267mg of potassium.

An antioxidant shield from the inside

The fruit is rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. This is the same compound that gives muskmelon its orange-yellow colour and keeps your eyes healthy. Combined with vitamin C, these antioxidants fight free radicals; unstable molecules that damage cells and speed up ageing. Eating muskmelon regularly in summer also gives the immune system a quiet boost.

Best time to eat it: Mid-morning or as an afternoon snack, not right after a full meal. Avoid eating it at night. Its high water content can disturb sleep for some people. Eat it fresh; don’t store cut muskmelon for more than a few hours.

Skin benefits that show up later

Because of the high water content and vitamins A and C, muskmelon also supports skin health from within. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, which keeps skin firm and helps small wounds heal faster. In traditional use, muskmelon pulp has also been applied topically as a cooling face pack for sunburned or irritated skin.

People with diabetes should eat muskmelon in small amounts as it has natural sugar content. If you have kidney disease, consult your doctor.
