Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the first day of the five-day festival. The extravaganza starts with the first day i.e. Dhanteras which is falling on October 25, this year. Dhanteras precedes Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.

Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the moon cycle. Celebrated in the month of Karthik, it is believed auspicious to buy metals including gold, silver which will bring good luck in the house. Buying new utensils, especially of brass, copper is considered to be auspicious.

To signify Goddess’ long-awaited arrival, people use vermillion powder with rice flour to create small footprints symbolically representing the steps of the deity.
