Aseem Suri: Brilliant Indian Engineer Conquers American Music Industry

Aseem Suri, 33, – New Delhi native and graduate of The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi – produces unique multimedia installations, successfully exhibits in Boston and New York, and leads sound design teams for cutting-edge music projects in the United States and Europe.

Suri, who had also studied on scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston and often appears under the artistic name ZYkR, created an interactive installation – Piece of Mind – for the 2nd International Csound Conference where computer music pioneers and living legends cheered an unnerving and fascinating work by the talented Indian engineer-artist.

A sought-after producer, Suri worked as one of the leaders of a sound team that set up over 100 musicians across 2 apartment buildings in Brooklyn, New York, for one-of-a-kind live recording session produced by Apartment Sessions, an acclaimed multimedia artist collective.

Suri – a strong proponent of Indian culture – performed at Boston’s historical Symphony Hall during The Festival of Light – a celebration of the life and career of Academy Award winning Indian composer A.R. Rahman, and recently worked as producer, arranger and sound designer for Pranjal Dua, winner of the National Film Awards: Best Director Award.

“Fromaveryyoungage, designers and inventor shave fascinated me. Theones who created somethingnew out of nothing and forever changed our world,” reflects Suri.

“As I grew up, this wonderment transformed into desiretodosomething new and unique, something truly stemming from my inner potential, something that exists because of the technologies and the ideologies of the moment. From audio programming to writing apps, designing visuals to running psychology experiments, circuit bending and building alternate controllers to creating installations, through my art and otherwise I find myself trying to challenge preexisting notions and practices, most of all my own.”

Suri is currently completing the development of a new interactive multimedia installation, I Hear You, for well- known French-American Irene Mamiye Studio. The immersive installation will be exhibited by Harvestworks, America’s pioneering electronic arts organization, at Governor’s Island in New York later this month.

Suri’s next projects will be overseeing multimedia works for prominent Intersection Arts, producing music album for acclaimed Malaysian guitarist Aleif Hamdan, and creating a new installation for ArtXCode to be displayed at the trendy POP;68 gallery during the 2020 Art Cologne (Germany) the world’s oldest and most prestigious contemporary art fair, presented at the Cologne Exhibition Centre, one of the largest exhibition centers in Europe.
