A woman died while her husband sustained injuries when a wild elephant attacked them at Kalladi near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday.

The deceased, a native of Puthumala near Meppadi in Wayanad, has been identified as Jessy (46). Her husband, Shaji, sustained injuries in the attack, which took place at Kalladi along the main Meppadi–Chooralmala road.

The couple was travelling together on a scooter early in the morning on their way to work when a wild elephant blocked their path, knocked over the vehicle, and attacked them. Jessy suffered critical injuries and was rushed to the nearby medical college hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her wounds. Shaji remains under medical treatment.

The incident has triggered renewed outrage and intense protests among local residents. Community members are demanding urgent intervention from the forest department, highlighting that human-wildlife conflict has become dangerously frequent, severely threatening civilian lives in the region.
