Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu were caught in a spat today outside Parliament. While Rahul Gandhi called Union MoS Bittu a traitor, Bittu hit back at Rahul Gandhi and referred to him and his party members as ‘desh ke dushman.’ What began as an exchange of remarks between the two leaders has triggered a huge political row as the Bharatiya Janata Party has referred to the traitor remark as an attack against the entire Sikh community.
The Congress MP made the ‘traitor’ remark after the Union MoS Bittu commented on the Congress MPs protesting at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament. Bittu said, “They are sitting as if they won a war.”

Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi said, “Here is a traitor walking right by. Look at the face…” Also, the Congress MP offered to shake hands with Bittu, saying, “Hello brother, my traitor friend.” He added that Bittu will come back to the Congress party. He said, “Don’t worry, you will come back (to Congress).” However, Bittu refused to shake hands with Rahul.
The verbal altercation broke out when the Union MoS Bittu passed by Rahul, while he was standing at Makar Dwar with some protesting Congress MPs. The Congress party today staged a protest against the suspension of eight party MPs from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Budget session. The eight MPs were suspended yesterday for violating rules and “throwing papers on the chair” following uproar in the House over Rahul Gandhi’s mentioning of the 2020 standoff with China in Ladakh.
The protesting MPs were seen holding posters reading “PM is compromised.”
‘Sadak ka gunda,’ Bittu slams Rahul
Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s traitor remark, Ravneet Singh Bittu called the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha a ‘Sadak ka gunda.’ Bittu said, “He (Rahul Gandhi) has good fitness, but I too am strong. But this is not what we do in politics. We have to speak with decorum using Parliamentary language. He is exposed today. He stooped to hooliganism…”
Bittu also called himself the biggest patriot and mentioned that his father sacrificed himself for the Sikhs. He claimed that the Congress party and the Gandhi family had set Punjab on fire. He further attacked the Congress party for targeting thousands of Sikhs and Punjabis and killing them.
He slammed Rahul Gandhi for his comments, saying, “If Rajiv Gandhi is called ‘shaheed’, we should also say shaheed-e-azam Sardar Beant Singh. I also come from that family, this is my pain. Grandson of one martyr was fine as long as I was with him. Now that I am in the BJP, he is using such words for me.”
Bittu alleged that Rahul Gandhi considers himself to be the owner of this country. He said, “What does he think of himself? He extended his hand towards me as if he is an emperor.”
On his ‘desh ke dushman’ remark, Bittu said, “I might not belong to the Gandhi family, but I have a turban on my head. So, when he offered to shake hands with me, I said ‘aap log toh desh ke gaddar ho, desh ke dushman ho’ who speaks against the Army and the nation everyday.
He went on to call the Gandhi family the murderers of Sikhs and thereby refused to shake hands with Rahul Gandhi.
‘It’s a slur on Sikhs,’ says Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri strongly condemned the traitor remark by Rahul Gandhi for MoS Bittu and called it a slur on the entire Sikh community. He said, “The way Rahul Gandhi has addressed parliamentarian and respected Sikh leader Sardar Ravneet Singh Bittu, as a ‘Traitor’ crosses all boundaries of civility, decency and dignity.”
Puri stated that such a remark by the LoP reflects that the Congress MP holds a deep grudge against Bittu for choosing the policies of Vikas espoused by the Modi-led government over the directionless Congress. He emphasised that nothing can ever justify such a slur against a proud Sikh whose own grandfather was slain by terrorists. He said, “Calling someone a ‘traitor friend’ means he has betrayed his country. While Shri Gandhi may have many friends who are traitors, Shri Bittu is certainly not one of them.”
Sirsa attacks Congress, demands action
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also slammed Rahul Gandhi for calling Bittu a traitor. He said, “The kind of words used by Rahul Gandhi against a Sikh Minister, calling a Sikh Sardar ‘traitor’ – I strongly condemn this. This is very shameful.”
He strongly disapproved of the usage of such words for a Sikh leader and stressed that if there is a traitor, it is Rahul Gandhi. He said, “Sikh Sardar can never be a traitor. Reflecting such a mindset and using such words for Sikhs, says that Congress mindset has not changed even to this day.
Recalling the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib, Sirsa attacked the Gandhi family and said, “If there is a traitor, it is the Gandhi family, which attacked Sri Darbar Sahib with tanks, which harmed Akal Takht Sahib, which burned the innocent Sikhs alive. We strongly condemn the sin you have committed, the insult you hurled at Sikhs, and the foul words you used for Sikhs. We will not tolerate this.”
Sirsa has demanded that the Lok Sabha Speaker take immediate action against LoP Rahul Gandhi.
