Veteran journalist Sam Rajappa bags National Press Award

Veteran journalist Sam Rajappa, who has been associated with The Statesman in various capacities since 1962, has been jointly awarded the prestigious Raja Ram Mohun Roy award for his contributions to journalism. He shares the award with eminent Oriya journalist and editor, Sarat Mishra.

Announcing the National Awards for Journalism, the Press Council of India in a statement on Tuesday said Rajappa and Mishra had been selected for their outstanding contributions to the cause of journalism. They and other winners will receive their awards on National Press Day on 16 November.

Rajappa was for many years the head of The Statesman’s bureau in South India and was the founder-director of the Statesman Print Journalism School. He has over the course of his distinguished career also worked with India Today and AP Times (which he edited) and was the BBC’s correspondent in southern India.

The award for rural journalism and development reporting was bagged by Shalini Nair of Indian Express and the award for investigative journalism was shared by K Sujith of Mangalam daily and Chitrangada Choudhary, a freelance journalist.

The award for best single news picture was shared by C K Thanseer of Chandrika Daily and Vijay Verma of Press Trust of India. J Suresh of Malayala Manorama was selected for the best photo feature and Gireesh Kumar MP of Times of India for best newspaper art.

The National Awards for Journalism were instituted in 2012 by the Press Council of India.
