Security forces gunned down two militants in an encounter on Wednesday, 24 January, in J-K’s Shopian district. The crossfire also led to the death of a local boy and injuries to two women.

Following the encounter, SP Vaid, Director-General of Jammu and Kashmir, tweeted, “In an encounter today at Saigund Shopian, two terrorists have been neutralised and weapons have been recovered. Unfortunately one boy was also killed in the cross-fire and two ladies sustained injuries. Search is still going on.”

The gunfight erupted in Dairoo’s Chaigund area in the district. Personnel from 44 Rashtriya Rifles and 14 Battalion of CRPF along with the J-K Police engaged the militants after information confirmed their presence in the area.

“Distressed to hear of two girls critically injured & a young boy who lost his life in clashes at Shopian. I pray for this dreadful cycle of violence to end soon, [sic]” tweeted J-K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Terrorists often infiltrate into the Indian side under the cover of Pakistani ceasefire violations.

According to the Ministry of Defence data, there have been 134 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC till 21 January. By comparison, there were just seven ceasefire violations in the month of January 2017.

A total of 860 ceasefire violations were recorded in 2017, with the highest, 147, reported in December.
