CPI (M) general secretary MA Baby Sunday expressed shock and sorrow over the tragic death of over 36 people in a stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, Baby emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry into the incident and fixing accountability for the tragedy.

The stampede took place when a massive crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of Vijay, resulting in chaos and panic. Reports suggest that Vijay’s nearly six-hour delay in arriving at the rally may have contributed to the tragedy, as the crowd grew restless and overwhelmed under the scorching sun.

Meanwhile, the death toll has risen to 40, with several others injured and hospitalized.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased in the Karur rally stampede. Additionally, the injured will receive Rs 50,000.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the victims’ families and ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Vijay has expressed his anguish and sorrow over the incident, announcing a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to the injured.

A case has been registered against TVK functionaries, including the party’s Karur district secretary, for culpable homicide.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and demands for accountability, with many questioning the preparedness and security measures at the rally. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
