A fiery speech at a political meeting has turned into a major legal and political controversy, with police action, protests by supporters and an investigation now underway.

A political row broke out in Tamil Nadu after Vilathikulam DMK MLA Markandeyan was arrested in the early hours of Monday over alleged threatening remarks made against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during a public meeting in Kovilpatti.
The controversy began after videos of the MLA’s speech from the meeting were widely shared on social media.

The DMK public meeting took place on Sunday night at the Krishnan Kovil Grounds in Kovilpatti. The event was chaired by MLA I. Karunanidhi and attended by several party functionaries, including union secretaries Beekilipatti Murugesan, Radhakrishnan, Jayakannan, Subramanian, Karuppasamy and Chinnapandian.

While addressing party workers, Markandeyan strongly criticised Chief Minister Vijay over recent political developments and the functioning of the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
During his speech, Markandeyan allegedly made remarks that were viewed as threatening towards the Chief Minister. He reportedly said that if the Assembly was convened, “your bones will not remain intact,” and further claimed that DMK legislators would “break your bones and send you back.”
The statements were widely seen as direct threat against the Chief Minister. Soon after the meeting, videos of speech spread rapidly across social media platforms.
Several critics accused the MLA of using violent and inflammatory language against a constitutional office-holder. Political leaders from different quarters demanded immediate action against him.
Following complaints over the speech, police arrested Markandeyan from his residence in Vilathikulam during the early hours of Monday.
After taking him into custody, officers escorted him for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.
According to police sources, the MLA was later taken to the office of the Superintendent of Police for further interrogation.
The arrest led to protests outside the legislator’s residence. Supporters gathered at the spot, raised slogans against the police action and attempted to stop the police vehicle carrying the MLA.
Police intervened, dispersed the protesters and cleared the road before moving the legislator from the area.
