‘Systematic effort’ by PM Modi to cripple Congress financially: Sonia Gandhi

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Thursday alleged that a “systematic effort is underway” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cripple the Indian National Congress financially.

Addressing a rare press conference, Ms Gandhi said, “The issue we are taking up today is extremely serious. The issue affects not just the Indian National Congress but the democracy itself. A systematic effort is underway by the Prime Minister to cripple the Indian National Congress financially.”

Referring to the freezing of Congress party’s bank accounts ahead of Lok Sabha elections, the former Congress president said that the finances of the country’s principal Opposition party were under assault amid the electoral bonds issue.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi also accompanied her during the press conference.

Kharge stressed the need to conduct free and fair elections and that those in power should not control the Constitutional bodies and central agencies.

“India is known for its democratic values and models in the whole world. A fair election is essential for any democracy, along with a level playing field for all the political parties. It shouldn’t be the case that the one in power should have the authority over the media and control over IT, ED, Election Commission and other autonomous bodies,” the Congress president said.
