A shootout in Ghorawal area in UP’s Sonbhadra left nine people dead and several injured, when a village head along with his supporters allegedly opened fire on a rival group over a land dispute.

Four women were also reportedly among the dead in the incident that took place in the Sapahi village.

“Nine people have been killed and 19 injured in the incident of firing,” District Magistrate Ankit Kumar Agarwal told reporters here.

The injured have been rushed to the hospital and some of them are in a critical condition.

A case has been registered and five persons have been arrested so far, including two nephews of the village head, Yagya Dutt.

According to UP DGP OP Singh, firing took place after the villagers protested when Dutt went there with allies to take possession of the land which he had purchased two years ago.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and directed the DM to provide immediate medical attention to injured.

He also directed DGP to personally monitor the case & ensure effective action, officials said.
