Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Monday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah that former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar is “missing” and attempts to reach him have been unsuccessful.

He also said that some of his Rajya Sabha colleagues are planning to file a habeas corpus writ petition in the Supreme Court since they are genuinely worried about Dhankhar.

A Habeas Corpus writ petition if accepted by the Supreme Court of India would compel the police to locate Dhankhar and produce him before the court as soon as possible.

“Before knocking on the doors of the Supreme Court, I thought it to be prudent to seek this information from you. I hope you will understand my sentiments and provide genuine information regarding Shri Dhankhar’s current whereabouts, his safety and health,” Raut tweeted, posting the letter he wrote to Amit Shah on his X account on Monday.

Incidentally, Dhankhar resigned as Vice President of India on July 21, on the very first day of the monsoon session of the Parliament, which had taken people by surprise.

“There has been no information about the whereabouts of our (former) vice president. What is his current location? How is his health? There is no clarity on these matters. Some members of the Rajya Sabha attempted to contact him but were unsuccessful,” Raut has stated in his letter written to Amit Shah dated August 10.

Raut said that wild rumours are circulating in Delhi that former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has been confined to his residence and is reportedly “not safe”. “There has been no communication with him or his staff, which is a matter of grave concern,” Raut stated in his letter written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“What exactly has happened to our (former) vice president? Where is he? How is his health? Is he safe? The nation deserves to know the truth about these questions,” Raut stated.

Incidentally, last week, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had asked about Dhankhar’s whereabouts. “Where is the former vice president now? This is the issue which must be discussed,” Uddhav had stated at a press conference on Thursday.

Uddhav Thackeray referred to Dhankar’s disappearance on Monday once again at a press conference in Mumbai where he said, “In China, if someone says something against the government, they disappear. Here also similar things have happened. The Vice President was removed and now he is missing. Show us where he is”.

Thackeray questioned Dhankhar’s disappearance and asked the BJP to disclose his whereabouts at a press conference on Monday, after he addressed a gathering at a protest demonstration calling for the ouster of tainted Fadnavis cabinet ministers.

He accused the BJP of being ‘Bhrashtachari Janata Party’ and mocked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying “He is not a chief minister, but a ‘thief minister’. The Congress has given him a good name.”

Thackeray challenged Fadnavis to “Either throw away the pressure from Delhi or risk being swept away by rising public anger”.

“He (Fadnavis) has a brute majority, and his bosses sit in Delhi. Yet he cannot muster the courage to sack the corrupt ministers. Even if we assume that he has not indulged in corruption himself, why is he covering up for others? We know that the BJP has no candidate who can be its national party president, but don’t you also have anyone to replace these tainted ministers?” Uddhav Thackeray asked.
