Health experts have underlined that soft tissue sarcomas, a rare and complex group of cancers, require precise diagnosis, careful staging and coordinated treatment planning.

Soft tissue sarcoma is a type of cancer that affects the body’s soft tissues, including fat, muscles and blood vessels.

The Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) hosted the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Summit 2026 at Rohini here, bringing together national and international experts for focused discussions on soft tissue sarcomas, which require specialised diagnosis and multidisciplinary care.

The summit featured experts from India as well as international faculty, including specialists from MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States and Seoul National University, South Korea. The event reinforced the importance of multidisciplinary tumour boards in improving outcomes for patients with rare cancers.

Discussions during the programme highlighted how coordinated inputs from surgery, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology and medical oncology can help determine the most appropriate treatment approach, particularly in complex, recurrent and high-risk sarcoma cases.

The scientific programme covered key areas across the sarcoma care pathway, including molecular diagnostics, precision oncology, neoadjuvant therapies, surgical management, limb-salvage strategies, radiation therapy, oligometastatic disease, osteosarcoma treatment, extraskeletal Ewing’s sarcoma and complex case-based discussions.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Dharmendra Singh Gangwar, CEO, RGCIRC, said, “Soft tissue sarcomas are complex cancers that demand highly specialised, multidisciplinary care. Platforms such as the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Summit 2026 are important because they bring together expertise from across disciplines and geographies, enabling doctors to exchange knowledge and strengthen evidence-based treatment approaches.”

Dr Ullas Batra, Co-Director, Medical Oncology, and Chief of Thoracic Medical Oncology, RGCIRC, as well as a member of the organising team, said, “Accurate pathology and molecular profiling are central to sarcoma management. With newer diagnostic tools and precision oncology approaches, we are better equipped to classify tumours, guide treatment and support personalised care for patients.”

Dr Himanshu Rohela, Orthopaedic Oncologist, RGCIRC, and a member of the organising team, said, “Soft tissue sarcomas demand precise diagnosis, careful staging and coordinated treatment planning.”
