The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will conduct a comprehensive review of the men’s T20I team following the conclusion of the ongoing England tour, with the performances of both the players and the support staff set to come under scrutiny after a string of disappointing results.

The decision comes after India slumped to a nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I in Bristol, handing England an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The defeat followed India’s first-ever T20I series loss to Ireland earlier this month, raising concerns over the team’s form less than a year after lifting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Speaking to IANS from Edinburgh, where the ICC Annual Conference is underway, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that a detailed assessment would be carried out once the tour concludes.

“The Indian T20I team is going through a bad phase against England and earlier against Ireland. We have to review the team’s performances once the series is over,” Saikia said.

“We need to understand the problems the team is facing and try to address them. A detailed review will be conducted immediately after the ODI series ends on July 19.”

Coaching staff also set to be assessed

According to a BCCI source, the review will not be limited to the players, with the performances of the coaching staff also expected to be evaluated.

Although head coach Gautam Gambhir remains under contract until 2027, his tenure has come under increased scrutiny following India’s back-to-back T20I series defeats.

India’s struggles continue

India’s campaign under new captain Shreyas Iyer has exposed several recurring issues.

Apart from Iyer’s unbeaten 80 in Bristol, the batting line-up has struggled for consistency, particularly on seaming wickets, while the bowling attack, without senior pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, has lacked penetration. Fielding standards have also dipped throughout the tour.

The tourists suffered a four-wicket defeat in the second T20I before being bowled out for just 76 in Nottingham, resulting in a crushing 125-run defeat. England then wrapped up the series with a commanding chase of 159 in just 13.5 overs, powered by Harry Brook’s unbeaten 79 and Phil Salt’s 59 not out.

The Bristol victory also marked England’s first bilateral T20I series win over India in a contest of two or more matches.

Focus shifts to final T20I and Zimbabwe tour

India will now look to salvage some pride in the fifth and final T20I at Southampton on Saturday while also attempting to retain the No. 1 spot in the ICC men’s T20I rankings.

The findings of the BCCI review could influence the team’s approach ahead of the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, beginning in Harare on July 23.
