In a major breakthrough in the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) Punjab, in a well-coordinated operation with the Ferozepur Police and the Jammu & Kashmir Police, apprehended two Rajasthan-based shooters connection with the murder of a Ferozepur shopkeeper from Jammu & Kashmir, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Sunday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Vishnu Kumar, a resident of Rupbas in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, and Rahul Mahawar, a resident of Anantpura in Kota, Rajasthan. Police teams also recovered .30-bore Beretta pistol along with 10 live cartridges from their possession.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that accused Vishnu has a criminal background involving extortion, robbery, dacoity, theft and violations of the Arms Act. He was also carrying a reward of ₹10,000 announced by the Rajasthan Police. Further investigation is underway, he added.

Sharing more details, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), AGTF, Promod Ban said that following the incident, the AGTF Punjab launched a special operation codenamed “Hill Trap” under the supervision of DSP Rajan Parminder Singh, and conducted extensive raids in Rajasthan.

Acting on human intelligence developed during these raids, the accused’s hideout was traced to Jammu & Kashmir, he said, adding that the AGTF Punjab, Ferozepur Police and Jammu & Kashmir Police immediately launched a joint operation.

The ADGP said the accused were intercepted at a checkpoint set up on the Patnitop-Kud Road near Police Station Kud in Jammu & Kashmir. Upon being confronted by the police team, the accused allegedly attempted to evade arrest. However, the police teams successfully apprehended both accused and recovered the pistol from their possession, he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ferozepur Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said that police teams are now focusing on uncovering the larger conspiracy behind the incident, including identifying those who may have planned, financed or facilitated the attack.

An FIR had already been registered at the Makhu police station in Ferozepur in this connection under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act, .
