Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wished former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on her birthday and prayed for her “long and healthy life”.

In a tweet, Modi said: “Birthday greetings to former Gujarat CM @anandibenpatel. Anandiben is among the tallest political leaders in Gujarat.”

“Through her hardwork, she has strengthened the BJP and is admired for her administrative skills. I pray for her long and healthy life,” he said.

The first woman chief minister of Gujarat, Patel was born on November 21, 1941 in Mehsana, Gujarat.

Patel entered politics at the behest of her husband and RSS functionary Mafatbhai Patel and few months later, she was made the Gujarat BJP women’s wing president.

She took over the reins of Gujarat from Narendra Modi after the Lok Sabha elections in May 2014 in which the BJP got a landslide victory and Modi took oath as the Prime Minister.

However, Patel had a lackluster tenure as the CM of Gujarat compared to the 13 eventful years under CM Modi and she finally stepped down in August 2016. Patel was succeeded by Vijay Rupani.
