Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held significant meetings on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Tianjin, China, with leaders from neighbouring countries, including Nepal, the Maldives, and Egypt. These interactions underscore India’s commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

PM Modi met with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, describing India’s relations with Nepal as “deep-rooted and very special.”
This meeting highlights the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Nepal’s PM Oli had previously characterised a meeting with PM Modi during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok as “fruitful and progressive”, emphasising their commitment to enhancing Nepal-India relations.

PM Modi also interacted with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, reiterating the benefits of India’s development cooperation with Maldives for both nations. The two leaders discussed ways to deepen their partnership, including setting up a core group to explore areas of mutual benefit. India has extended USD 100 million in treasury bills to the Maldives and agreed to finalise a USD 400 million currency swap deal, demonstrating India’s commitment to supporting its island nation neighbour.

Additionally, PM Modi met with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, fondly recalling his visit to Egypt a few years ago. The two leaders acknowledged the growing friendship between India and Egypt, with PM Modi stating that their relationship is “scaling newer heights of progress.” This meeting highlights the strengthening ties between the two nations, built on a foundation of mutual respect and cooperation.

These meetings at the SCO Summit demonstrate PM Modi’s efforts to strengthen India’s relationships with neighbouring countries, promoting regional stability and cooperation. By engaging with leaders from Nepal, the Maldives, and Egypt, PM Modi is reinforcing India’s commitment to its Neighborhood First policy and its role as a key player in regional affairs.
