There may be a decrease in the number of road shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is popular for. In new rules that have been set by the Ministry of Home Affairs, not even ministers or senior government officials can come close to the PM if not cleared by his special security.

Issuing the guideline, the Ministry said that threat to the PM is at an “all-time high”. All the states have been told to ensure that security of the Prime Minister is of paramount importance and thus the police forces in the states must adhere to the new guidelines.

Various agencies tasked with the security of PM Modi were told that he “is the most valuable target in the run-up to the 2019 general elections”.

The decision was taken earlier in June in a meeting held at Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence which was attended by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Rajiv Jain.

According to reports, the Home Minister also set up a committee to review the security of PM Modi, who has been provided with a multi-layered and impregnable Z+ plus security cover.

The meeting was called in the wake of alleged threat of Modi’s assassination by Maoists.

Maharashtra Police in Pune on June 7 had informed a court that they had seized a “letter” from the house of a Delhi resident Rona Wilson, one of the five people arrested on 6 June for having alleged Maoist “links”, that mentioned about a plan of the ultras mulling “Rajiv Gandhi-type incident” and suggesting that Modi should be targeted during his road shows.
