In a rare incident, a Pakhawaj artist performing before a crowded audience died of a massive heart attack here on Monday evening.

Dinesh Prasad, 67, a Pakhawaj player of the Mathura Gharana, passed away due to cardiac arrest on the stage at the Santakda festival while performing during Taal Vadya Kachari program at Baradari.

Zeeshan Abbas, who was accompanying him on Sarangi, said after playing the Pakhawaj for 15-20 minutes, Dinesh complained of breathlessness.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital, but doctors said he died on the way.

His last rites were performed today.

He is survived by wife Kamlesh, son Piyush and three daughters Nidhi, Ruchi and Shruti.

Late Dinesh Prasad taught music at the Sangeet Natak Akademi from 1989 to 2014. He was also honored with the SNA Award in 2005. He was a Pakhawaj player as well as an excellent tabla player.
