In a meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a Law Ministry proposal was approved to celebrate 25 January every year as ‘National Voters’ Day’. It started from 25 January, 2011 to mark Commission’s foundation day.

The day is observed to mark the establishment of the Election Commission on this day in 1950, a day before India became a republic.

It is a day to celebrate the right to vote. In 2018, National Voters’ Day will celebrate its eight year. The celebrations will be used to spread awareness among voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process.
