The Additional District & Sessions Judge, Padampur in Odisha’s Bargarh district sentenced a man to life imprisonment for committing the murder of an 11-year-old boy about three-and-a-half-year ago.
The convict, Rastra Barik, a resident of Village Kendmundi village under Sohela police station limits, was found guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced to Rigorous Imprisonment for life with a fine of Rs 25,000, in default of payment of which the convict shall undergo additional Rigorous Imprisonment for six months.

According to case records, on 26 June, 2022, the deceased, Rikesh Biswal, was playing on the village road when the accused assaulted him. The victim was immediately shifted to VIMSAR, Burla for treatment with grievous injuries and later succumbed to his injuries.

During the trial, the prosecution examined 26 witnesses, exhibited 18 documents, and proved four material objects. After careful appreciation of the evidence available on record, the Judge, Surya Narayan Dwivedy, awarded the sentence, the prosecution counsel Haresh Kumar Sunani said.
The conviction reflects the effective investigation and diligent prosecution by the Bargarh Police in securing justice in a heinous crime, said a senior police official.
