Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who is reportedly still in Italy, on Monday accepted defeat in the three states of North East – Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland.

In a tweet, the Gandhi scion said that the Congress party respect the mandate and that the efforts will be made to win the people’s trust back.

“The Congress party respects the mandate of the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

We are committed to strengthening our party across the Northeast and to winning back the trust of the people.

“My sincere thanks to each and every Congress worker who toiled for the party,” tweeted Gandhi.

Gandhi’s tweet has come two days after the results for assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland were announced on 3 March.

On Saturday, in response to a question posed by a reporter during a press conference Amit Shah took a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s absence saying that ‘there are elections in Italy as well.”

The party emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats in Meghalaya, but failed in forming the government as it didn’t have the support of regional parties to forge an alliance for coalition government.

The Congress couldn’t even win a single seat in Tripura and Nagaland.

On 1 March, Gandhi took to Twitter and informed that he is going to visit his 93-year-old grandmother in Italy over the Holi weekend.
