BJP’s unprecedented strike rate in elections: PM Modi
Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi highlighted the democratic election process of the party’s national president as well as members of its smallest units.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shri Nitin Nabin on being elected as the president of the world’s largest political party. For the past several months, the organisational election process, which involves electing leaders from the smallest unit of the party all the way up to the national president, has been continuously underway in a completely democratic manner, keeping in mind the spirit and every provision of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s constitution. Today, it has been formally concluded. This grand organisational election process is a symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s democratic faith, organisational discipline, and worker-centric approach. Our leadership is guided by tradition, enriched by experience, and advances the organisation with a spirit of public service and national service,” PM Modi told the gathering.
Modi further talked about the BJP’s journey from having zero seats in Parliament to achieving a majority on its own to form the government at the Centre.
“Under the leadership of Atal ji, Advani ji and Murali Manohar Joshi ji, the BJP saw a journey from zero to the summit. In this century, leaders like Shri M Venkaiah Naidu and Shri Nitin Gadkari, along with many of our senior colleagues, expanded the organisation. Under the leadership of Rajnath ji, for the first time, the BJP achieved a full majority on its own. Then under the leadership of Shri Amit Shah, the BJP formed governments in many states and came to power at the Centre for a second consecutive term. Then under the leadership of Shri JP Nadda, the BJP grew stronger from the panchayat to Parliament,” the PM recounted.
Modi further highlighted that the party has defeated the electoral trend wherein parties fail to stay in power for long. “At times, we have seen that after a long duration, a government finds it difficult to stay in power. But the BJP has broken this trend. Be it Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh or Bihar, in many states, the BJP has won elections with an even bigger majority. The BJP’s strike rate in elections is unprecedented.”
Praising Nitin Nabin, the PM highlighted his unique experience and qualities. “Nitin ji himself is, in a way, a millennial. He belongs to a generation that has witnessed a great deal of change in India. He belongs to an era which, in childhood, heard the news on the radio and today is well versed in using AI. Nitin ji has both youthful energy and a great deal of experience,” he stated.
Lotus will bloom in Bengal: Nadda
Earlier, outgoing national president Nadda told the gathering: “You (Nitin Nabin) have taken on the responsibility as the 12th National President of such a great party. Many congratulations and best wishes to you.”
“The results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections did not meet our expectations. These results surprised us as well as the general public. A sense of disappointment and resentment developed among the voters, they resolved that in any upcoming election, they would give their full blessings to Modi ji. The voters of the country and the voters of Haryana had decided to rectify the minor mistakes. They did exactly that in the Haryana elections. We saw a record victory in Maharashtra under the leadership of respected Modi ji. Under your leadership, after 27 years, the lotus bloomed in Delhi as well, and the Bharatiya Janata Party government was formed in Delhi,” Nadda added.
The outgoing BJP president also mentioned West Bengal, where elections are due in the next few months and where the BJP has never tasted power. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi ji and the chairmanship of Nitin Nabin ji, the Bharatiya Janata Party will bloom the lotus in Bengal in the coming times. We will form the government in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. We will return to power in Assam, and we will deliver good results in Kerala as well. We are moving forward with this confidence,” he said.
How Nitin Nabin was elected unopposed
Nabin’s elevation followed an unopposed election process, highlighting broad organisational backing within the BJP.
The BJP declared Nabin as the sole candidate for the post after the nomination and scrutiny process concluded without any competing names.
In an official announcement issued late on Monday, National Returning Officer K Laxman said that only one nomination remained valid after scrutiny and the withdrawal window.
“Only one name, that of Nitin Nabin, remained in the fray following the completion of the nomination process,” the Returning Officer said.
A total of 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in Nabin’s support between 2 pm and 4 pm on Monday. All were found valid. No withdrawals were recorded, and no other candidates entered the race.
The election process formally moved forward after 30 of the BJP’s 36 state unit presidents were elected, crossing the 50 per cent threshold required under the party Constitution.
The notification for the election schedule was issued on January 16, 2026, along with the publication of the electoral roll. Nominations opened and closed on Monday, followed by scrutiny.
Prayers, political messaging and what comes next
Before taking charge, Nabin this morning visited prominent religious sites in the national capital. He offered prayers at the Hanuman Mandir in the Connaught Place area and later paid obeisance at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in central Delhi.
At Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa welcomed Nabin’s visit and linked his elevation to the party’s broader political goals.
“Nitin Nibin arrived today at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib to pay obeisance. It is a matter of pride for us that he has arrived here today from the land of Patna Sahib; Nitin Nabin will make a significant contribution to Prime Minister Modi’s resolve for a developed India… Today, he is an inspiration for the youth and the party’s top leadership as well, and we are confident that he will play a major role in fulfilling Prime Minister Modi’s resolve for a developed India,” Sirsa said.
Nabin, 45, was appointed National Working President on December 14, 2025. His rise has been backed by the party’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and outgoing BJP president JP Nadda.
Senior BJP leaders, Chief Ministers, and representatives from several states submitted nomination papers in his favour earlier on Monday, signalling strong internal alignment.
As the sole candidate, Nabin was formally elected by the BJP’s electoral college, which includes members of the national council and state councils.
Under party rules, a candidate must be proposed by at least 20 electoral college members from a state and must have completed a minimum of 15 years in the party.
Party leaders see his appointment as an attempt to introduce younger leadership into the organisation while maintaining continuity in the BJP’s political and organisational direction.
The BJP's decision comes amid growing speculation around K Annamalai's political future, with supporters and rivals closely watching his next move in Tamil Nadu.
State BJP leadership has planned to welcome the party's national president at more than 25 locations, between Jollygrant Airport and party headquarters, on his arrival in Dehradun on Thursday evening.
