A 54-year-old labourer, Mahesh Thakur, from Bihar was allegedly made to lick his own spit, and was also beaten with slippers for allegedly trespassing a house in a village under Nalanda district.

The ‘punishment’ was handed out on the orders of Ajaypur village panchayat in Bihar on Thursday.

According to media reports, the labourer had allegedly entered a house of a local sarpanch Surendra Yadav on Wednesday to get tobacco, without knocking on the door.

Yadav has ‘accused’ Thakur to have reportedly entered the house in the absence of males.

However, Thakur claimed that he was unaware that only female members were home at that time, according to media reports. On Thursday, the  sarpanch convened a village court, which ordered Thaukur to go through the ‘punishment’.

Nalanda police on Friday registered an FIR against eight persons, including the Ajaypur mukhiya. No arrest has been made so far in the case.

In a video which has appeared on the social media, Thakur can be seen kneeling down and licking his own spit off the ground before getting thrashed with slippers by the women.

“The video shows the deep feudal outlook of the villagers. This is gross injustice and severe action will be initiated against the culprits. None will be spared,” Nalanda district magistrate Thiagarajan SM told the media on Friday. The DM also appealed to the masses to change this feudal outlook.

Nalanda is the home district of Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is yet to react over the issue. He, however, reacted over the killing of a man in police firing over the protesting mob and ordered for an inquiry.

Curiously, the Chief Minister, of late, has turned “social reformer” and has launched a vigorous campaign against dowry and child marriages after enforcing total ban on alcohol.
