Till the midnight of Thursday when the counting of votes for the Maharashtra Assembly election began at 8 am, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 104 seats while it was leading on one seat. BJP’s ally Shiv Sena has won 56 seats. With this, the total number of seats of the BJP-SS alliance has gone up to 161 seats in a house of a total of 288 seats.

This means that the BJP-SS alliance has comfortably crossed the majority mark of 145 seats required to form the government in the state.

On the other hand, Congress and its ally the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have got 43 and 54 seats respectively, a total of 97 seats. Congress is leading at one seat till the reports last came in.

Even though the BJP has managed to pull a major chunk of votes, going by the results and trends, its tally is down by 17 seats compared to its performance in the 2014 Assembly elections when it got 122 seats. Shiv Sena too had gone down in terms of seats as it got 56 compared to 63 seats in 2014.

The surprising factor is the bounce of the NCP as it increased its tally to 54 compared to 41 seats in 2014 Assembly elections. Congress had got 42 seats in the last Assembly elections.

The elections to the 288 seat Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra were held in a single phase on October 21. Maharashtra registered a low voter turnout as compared to 2014.

As many as 3,237 candidates, including 235 women, contested in 288 seats.

Interestingly, Shiv Sena has once again mentioned the 50-50 formula with the results going their way. Addressing a press conference, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said: “We reached formula when Amit Shah came to my house, now time to implement that formula.”

While speaking about the 50-50 alliance formula, Thackeray asked, “The main question is, who will be the chief minister?”
