Barghat Police Station House Officer Mohnish Singh Bains said the deceased have been identified as Deep Singh Chauhan (50) and his wife Durga Bai Chauhan (45), both locals.
He said the couple was returning home on a motorcycle after attending a wedding when the truck, carrying rice, lost control ostensibly due to potholes on the road and overturned on them on a bridge over the Hirri river.
Both died on the spot, while the truck driver sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, locals alleged that the poor condition of the Seoni-Balaghat state highway has led to several accidents in the past. They said the road is riddled with potholes and lacks proper shoulders, posing risk to commuters.
Residents had earlier staged protests demanding repair and upgradation of the road, which has been approved for four-laning, but work is yet to begin.
Dr Mohan Yadav-led BJP state government has not yet announced any compensation for the family of the deceased.
