Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, two of India’s greatest cinestars who are now taking a plunge into the murky waters of politics, met in Chennai on a warm Sunday afternoon.

Haasan, who announced his decision to enter politics early in 2017, met Rajinikanth at the latter’s residence at Poes Garden in Chennai.

The meeting generated a fresh wave of speculations around a possible alliance between the two . But Haasan, who is addressed by his fans as ‘Ulaganayagan’ (Hero of the world), told reporters that there was no “political angle” to the meeting.

“It was just a courtesy call, a part of friendship” said Haasan after emerging outside Rajinikanth’s residence following the meeting.

“I met him and apprised him of my political tour. I am meeting people I like before I begin my journey,” the 63-year-old Haasan told reporters. According to reports, Haasan invited Rajinikanth for the launch of the latter’s political party in Madurai.

Rajini, who is fondly addressed as ‘Thalaivar’ (Leader) by his fans, announced his foray into politics on 17 December last year.

Following the meeting, the 67-year-old Rajinikanth said that he prayed for Haasan’s success.

“He (Haasan) wants to serve the people of Tamil Nadu. He has not entered politics for fame or money. I pray to God that he attains success,” he told the reporters.

But Rajinikanth hinted that there is a difference in their political ideologies.

“Even in cinema, his (Haasan’s) style has been different, my style has been different. In politics too, his style will be different, my style will be different,” Rajinikanth said adding that the common goal is to serve people.

While Haasan will be announcing the name of his party on 21 February in Madurai, from where he will launch his state-wide tour to “understand the people”, Rajinikanth has not made any announcement in this regard so far.

This is the second time that Rajinikanth and Haasan came together following their decision to enter politics. The two had met at an event in January triggering speculations of an alliance. Haasan has made it clear that he won’t form an alliance with Rajinikanth if the latter’s ideology is “saffron”.
