This is not the first time the two have skipped a court date. When the case was taken up earlier as well, neither CM Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in person and were represented only by their respective counsels.

Considering their public profiles, requests had reportedly been made seeking permission for them to participate in the proceedings through video conferencing, citing security concerns and logistical difficulties. It is not yet clear whether the court has ruled on those requests.

How the case has progressed so far

The legal dispute, initiated by Sangeetha, was first brought before court on February 26. Subsequently, the matter was deferred to April 20, notably falling just three days ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

The Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court took up the case as the fourth item on the court’s list on April 20. After a brief session, the judge ordered a further adjournment, pushing the next hearing to mid-June.

The June 15 date was expected to be a significant one. The next hearing, scheduled for June 15, was expected to determine the further course of the proceedings in what continues to be a closely watched case in both political and public circles. However, the hearing ended without any development, and the case now moves to August 7.

What Sangeetha has sought in her petition

Sangeetha had filed petition before Chengalpattu Family Court in December 2025 seeking divorce from CM Vijay citing irreconcilable differences. In her plea, she also sought alimony and requested the right to continue residing in their Neelankarai residence.

As per the divorce petition, Sangeetha accused Vijay of infidelity alleging that he had adulterous relationship with an actress.

Petition states that in April 2021, Sangeetha discovered that Vijay was involved in adulterous relationship with an actress which caused her deep emotional pain and mental suffering. The petition further alleged that Vijay continued his association with the actress even after Sangeetha became aware of it.

The petition also stated that since 2021, Vijay had emotionally withdrawn, treating his wife with verbal disdain and subjecting her to constructive desertion, forcing her to live separately within the matrimonial home. Vijay continued to travel abroad and attend public events with the said actress.

The plea seeks dissolution of marriage on the grounds of adultery and cruelty under Section 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

Vijay and Sangeetha: Background

Vijay and Sangeetha met for the first time in 1996. Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan, was brought up in Britain. The couple registered their marriage in 1998 in the UK, following which they also held a ceremonial marriage as per Hindu traditions in Chennai on August 25, 1999. They are parents to a son, Jason, and a daughter, Dhivya.

After marriage, Sangeetha chose to remain outside the entertainment industry and focused on family life. She has rarely given interviews and has largely stayed away from the spotlight. Their son Jason was born in 2000, and daughter Divya Saasha was born in 2005. Both children have made brief appearances in Vijay’s films.

Vijay’s political journey alongside the case

The divorce case has played out in parallel with one of the most significant phases of Vijay’s public career. He is the founder and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and recently became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following the state assembly elections. The April 20 hearing had fallen just three days before polling day, drawing additional attention to the case.
