With campaigning for the Assembly elections 2026 at its peak, Assam Chief Minister Himanta on Saturday made three key promises if he returns to power in the state for the third consecutive term.

The three promises he made are – Uniform Civil Code, Immigration Impact Act and a Bill against Love Jihad.

“A lot is going to be implemented. The UCC. The Immigration Impact Act. Bill against Love Jihad,” CM Sarma said in a response to a reporter question on Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s promise to implement the UCC in Assam.

Earlier on Friday, Shah, while adressing a rally in Chaigaon, asserted that the BJP would implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam if re-elected.

“We will implement UCC in Assam, and after this, no one will be permitted to have four marriages,” he said, in an indirect reference to Muslims.

Bill against ‘Love Jihad’

Several BJP-ruled states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, and Uttarakhand have already enacted laws against “Love Jihad”, technically termed anti-conversion laws, to regulate religious conversions.

While critics have called “love-jihad” nothing but an “Islamophobic” conspiracy theory by right-wing organisations, the issue often finds top spot in the BJP’s political agendas.

Immigration Impact Act

The proposed Immigration Impact Act is expected to tackle illegal infiltration, an issue that has emerged as a central plank of the BJP’s election campaign in Assam.

The BJP, which has been ruling the state of Assam for a decade, accuses the Congress of handing over the state to Muslim infiltrators.

The saffron party has vowed to hand-pick each and every infiltrator and deport them if voted to power for the third term
