Raising serious concerns over Aadhaar enrolment figures coming from certain districts of Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, June 17, claimed that the number of Aadhaar cards issued has exceeded the projected population in some areas.
He has described it as a potential “demographic red flag” in the border state.

“In certain districts of Assam, Aadhar enrolment has surpassed the total population, which in a border State like ours, reeks of a larger demographic conspiracy. To ensure no undeserving person acquires Aadhar, we have placed restrictions on its issuance to people above 18 years,” Sarma wrote on X.
The Assam Chief Minister stated that the state government has already taken key steps to prevent ineligible persons from obtaining Aadhaar cards. He added that restrictions have been imposed regarding issuance of Aadhaar cards to those above the age of 18 years.
In a graphic, Sharma termed it as a “red flag” and said that Aadhaar saturation above 100 per cent in certain districts effectively means that more of them have been generated than the actual projected population.
This comes amid the state government’s efforts to tighten scrutiny over identity documents and strengthen verification mechanisms.
