Financial terrorism: Congress attacks Modi govt after ‘money deducted from its bank accounts

The Opposition Congress on Thursday accused the Narendra Modi government of “stealing money” from its bank accounts and termed it “financial terrorism” to break the grand old party.

Addressing a press conference, Congress treasurer Ajay Maken alleged that the BJP government compelled banks to deduct approximately Rs 65.89 crore from the party’s bank accounts.

“The BJP government compelled the banks to transfer approximately Rs. 65.89 crore from the Congress party’s bank deposits to the government. This is clearly financial terrorism imposed by the BJP government on the Congress party,” the Congress said.

Maken further said that it was an attempt to break the Congress party financially ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

“This is an attempt to break the Congress party financially so that we are not able to contest elections. If our accounts are frozen then how will we contest elections and campaign,” he said.

Maken said that political parties are exempt from income tax because the money that comes to the party is used to keep the democracy alive in the country.

“If income tax is being taken from Congress party then why is it not being taken from BJP,” he asked.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that earlier demonisation was done just before Uttar Pradesh polls and similarly, Opposition parties are being ‘tax attacked’ before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“Demonetization was done just before the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Because Modi government wanted that parties should not be able to contest elections. Similarly, before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, opposition parties have been ‘tax attacked’. It has only one objective – to weaken the Congress party financially, so that we are not able to contest elections,” Jairam Ramesh said.
