Eight ministers in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government tendered their resignations on Tuesday, clearing the decks for a major cabinet reshuffle in the state.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who leads the National People’s Party (NPP)-led coalition, met Governor C H Vijayashankar at Raj Bhavan to formally submit the resignations. The new council of ministers will be sworn in at 5 pm today, officials confirmed.

Those who stepped down include several heavyweight ministers such as Health Minister AL Hek of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP), and Social Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh of the NPP.
Others in the list are Comingone Ymbon, Rakkam A Sangma, and Abu Taher Mondal of the NPP, Kyrmen Shylla of the UDP, and Shakliar Warjri of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).
The development is being seen as part of a calculated mid-term restructuring exercise by the MDA government.
According to political observers, the reshuffle seeks to inject fresh energy into the cabinet, recalibrate representation among coalition partners, and consolidate the ruling alliance’s position ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls.
The NPP, which heads the coalition, has been governing Meghalaya since 2018 with support from the UDP, BJP, HSPDP, and other regional parties.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, the NPP emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a majority, leading to the revival of the MDA 2.0 coalition.
The new team of ministers, to be sworn in later in the day, is expected to reflect a more inclusive mix of young leaders and experienced politicians.
