Earthquake measuring 4.0 hits Sonipat, tremors felt across Delhi-NCR

Tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR region, Haryana, Punjab, northern Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh. The quake occurred at 3.37 pm.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Sonipat in Haryana on Sunday afternoon. Tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR region, Haryana, Punjab, northern Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh. The quake occurred at 3.37 pm.

No loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km and was of level VI intensity. People at Kanjhawala, Baghpat, Rampura and Kripa Narayan Marg felt the tremors with decreasing intensity.

This is the first earthquake recorded in the northern India in July. Himachal Pradesh alone has been rocked by four earthquakes of low intensity in June, three of which hit Chamba.

While an earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale hit Chamba on 26 June, another measuring 3.0 struck the same place on 23 June.

The previous two quakes struck Chamba and Shimla regions on 14 June and 17 June, respectively.

Earlier in May, a magnitude of 6.2 earthquake struck northern Afghanistan. The tremors of the quake were felt in parts of northern Indian and Pakistan.
